I. Sludge Reuse – An Inevitable Trend
Sludge from wastewater treatment plants falls into 2 main groups: ordinary sludge and sludge containing hazardous components.
Sludge, a by-product of wastewater treatment, was once regarded as a cost for businesses, because third parties had to be hired to treat it before discharge to the environment. With advances in technology, however, sludge is now seen as a valuable resource. According to a World Bank report, more than 30% of the world’s sludge has been reused, in applications such as agriculture, energy and construction materials.
In Vietnam, more than 7 million tonnes of sludge need to be treated every year. However, only a small part of it is recycled, mainly because of a lack of technology and of businesses developing in this value chain. This is a great opportunity to apply modern solutions and promote the circular economy model.
II. Sludge Reuse Solutions Today
1. Organic Fertiliser Production
Sludge contains high levels of nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, making it an ideal raw material for producing organic fertiliser. This process not only reduces the amount of sludge to be treated but also provides an environmentally friendly fertiliser source for agriculture.
2. Biofuel Production
Through processes such as anaerobic digestion and pyrolysis, sludge can be converted into biogas or biochar. This is a renewable energy source that helps reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
3. Building Material Production
Sludge can be treated and used as a raw material for producing unfired bricks or cement. This reduces the pressure on natural resources and cuts greenhouse gas emissions.
4. Heavy Metal Recovery
For sludge from industries such as plating, sludge containing heavy metals can be treated to recover the metals for reuse in industrial production.
III. Breakthrough Solutions From NGO International
As a high-tech environmental company, NGO International brings optimal, simple sludge reuse solutions that suit the real market conditions in Vietnam.
We apply advanced technologies such as:
- Anaerobic treatment: Biological sludge is further treated by digestion to reduce the total sludge volume and to produce biogas from the sludge, providing a clean energy source.
- Treatment into organic fertiliser (without composting): Ordinary sludge is dewatered, stabilised and combined with other organic materials to be converted into fertiliser for agriculture.
- Sludge from industrial production in particular has extremely diverse properties, and the reuse solution differs from one industry to another.
International Cooperation
NGO works with international organisations and research institutes to update and deploy the latest technologies in Vietnam. This helps ensure that our solutions are not only effective but also meet international standards.

Talk to an NGO engineer
Free survey and consultation. Send us the source and volume of your sludge, composition analysis results if available and the reuse direction you are interested in (organic fertiliser, biofuel, building materials, heavy-metal recovery); an NGO engineer will propose a suitable solution.
